How to Travel with Jewelry

As I was preparing for a trip, I couldn't figure out of how to pack my jewelry. I searched online and found some (expensive) "Jewelry Rolls" from a handful of retailers. But I don't travel THAT often to justify paying 40-60 bucks for that!

I also searched on Etsy for some handmade versions. There were some, but most were still more expensive than I wanted to pay-and most had some aspects I liked but also lacked other things. So, I sort of combined the things I liked best into one!

At the top there is a ribbon the attach necklaces. Right below it is a full length pocket to tuck them in.

Under that is a strip of "leather" (the fake stuff) that I put holes in the hang earrings. And a pocket below if they are long (or for bracelets).

And then a zippered pocket at the bottom for rings, watch, and any stud earrings.

I simply attached a ribbon the middle back to tie when folded or rolled up.

4th of July for the kids

This year I decided to make the kids some festive outfits for our 4th of July activities. Lucy's shirt is just one from Hobby Lobby that I added stars to. I stitched them on with the sewing machine. Her skirt is a skort that I already had. I just cut off the original skirt portion and made a new one with the bottom of a red shirt embellished with ruffles.

Emery's shirt is a cutout of the United States, stars, and 1776. I also sewed those on with a machine; except for the numbers which were too small. So, I sewed those on my hand. All in all, they turned out pretty good and were loved by those who wore them! :)

I made Lucy this little skirt for Valentine's Day this year. I used a tutorial found HERE. I omitted the pockets this time since she's so little. But, I'm sure I'll be making a few more of these in the future, and I'll add some cute little pockets. It was really easy and turned out super cute!

I made this changing pad to match my new diaper bag! (Not sure why the picture is sideways-sorry!)

I made it with a button and elastic closure

I folded it so that it fits in my bag flat but so that there is extra room to stuff a diaper and wipes case inside and wrap it up if I want to.

Today I experimented with using a strap and velcro closure on on the baby shoes instead of elastic. Oh, and there are no pleats!

Ribbon Board

I made this ribbon board to hang up bows and flower clips! I love how it turned out :)

It was really easy to make too. I just followed this tutorial HERE.

Moses Basket re-do

Moses baskets can be pretty expensive to buy new. And it seems the biggest difference in price is how cute the bedding is. So I decided to make my own bedding! I found this basket at a local consignment sale for $10.

It was in pretty decent shape, and came with a nice foam liner in the bottom.

This is how it looks now!

First, I made a new cover for the bottom layer of foam.

And then I covered the sides with fabric too. I admit it is far from looking perfect (I may have used some fabric glue :) but I think it's good enough.
One other short cut I took is to omit the handle slits that were in the original side pieces. It was a lot easier to just leave them out! Oh, and I also didn't cover the under side- but no one needs to know ;)

Baby blanket

Now that we know the baby is a girl, I'm getting all excited for all the cute girly things I can make!
I love that soft Minky Dot fabric and made a pretty little blanket. Minky isn't the easiest fabric to sew with (it stretches) but with THIS tutorial, it wasn't so bad at all!.

New felt quiet book

First of all I'm not sure why half of these got turned to the side but I don't know how to fix it! Oh well.
I made Emery a quick quiet book for the airplane. He already has a really nice one from Grandma last Christmas, but I thought something new would keep his attention at least for a little while. I got the inspiration HERE. But I decided to glue some things on each page and also add a little pocket for each page so everything wouldn't get all mixed up in the one pocket in the back. It isn't the highest quality but it only took a few hours to put together!

The first page is shape matching. The ones on the left are hot glued down and the ones on the right go in the little pocket. (Also if you notice I put an extra piece of velcro on the tab so when the book is open I can fold it over and not have it getting stuck onto other things!)

On this page I glued on the snow on the ground and the cloud in the sky. The snowman, snowflakes, and hat all are movable. I did glue on the buttons and face though since the pieces were so small!

This page all that is glued on the page is the stump. Everything else moves except the stripes on the presents which I glued on.

On this page the numbers are glued down and the squares all move to practice counting.

I made this glove glued on only on the outside edge so Emery can get his little hand into the mitten. The dots are movable to decorate the mitten.

I glued the one cloud under the rainbow on, but everything else moves and goes in the pocket.

The last page I didn't glue anything down. The letters of Emery's name move so he can practice spelling his own name!

Again, I know it's a little rough but he's only 3 so hopefully it will be good enough! :)

Christmas presents

I made Emery some gifts this year for Christmas. Thes are felt mail with little letters that fit into envelopes.

The stamps and name labels come off and can be moved around since they are just held on with velcro.

I also made Emery this little car keeper to take with us when we are traveling.

And lastly this is a little first aid kit for when Emery gets and ouchie!

It has a velcro closure and a clear vinyl front to see what is inside.

It's small enough I can keep it in my purse or in the car.

I made a goal for June to work on some sort of craft every day. My first project was a water bottle holder for Emery. I found the tutorial HERE at Make it and Love it.

Emery loves carrying things around and in this hot weather, it migh as well be a cool drink!

Next, I made a little folder game for Emery. I used some animal wall stickers from Dollar Tree. I bought 2 packs, one for the folder and one to pull on and off. I also used some contact paper to seal everything nicely. Oh, and to attach them I used sticky Velcro. I found an awesome kind that is clear! In the pictures below I pulled off the elephant, can you see the Velcro on the folder piece? I love it because it doesn't cover up the picture!

I have plans for making more folder games with the alphabet etc.

Next up...something for me! What is it, you may ask? A purse! Of coarse :) Stay tuned!!

Magnetic Alphabet

Making a homemade magnetic alphabet (that is way better than the dollar store ones made in China and probably full of lead) is really easy! I found a tutorial at This and That.Cut out printed letters. Place fabric on adhesive magnet sheets. Cut out letters from sheet.

Add a layer of Mode Podge.

Let dry, and place on refrigerator! (For more detailed instructions go to This and That).

Baby blocks and chain

My friend Laisa is having her baby next month! So, for her baby shower I made her some blocks and a chain. Since she doesn't know if she's having a boy or girl, I tried to use a variety of colors!

The blocks were super easy, but the chain gave me some trouble!! I should have made them a little bigger, which would have made them easier to stuff and sew up.

Pear Messenger Bag

Using another set of Orla Keily towels from Target, I made this messenger bag.

I really love the pears :D

I even added 2 pockets to the inside of this one!

I did line it with fusible fleece to give it some weight, but it probably needed a little more. Oh well, now I know for next time.

I'm so glad Spring is here! To celebrate, I made this Spring Tote bag from the Orla Keily towels at Target. You can find the tutorial I used HERE at homemadebyjill. She has lots of other great tutorials there too, so look around!

Blanket

I decided that with this chilly weather, I needed a new blanket. And I thought this summery floral fabric might help me look forward to warmer days! (The fabric is from the Surf and Sand collection).

It's a really simple blanket. I just used the back side fabric to wrap around as my binding. I decided to use a spray adhesive to keep the fabric in place on the batting. I think it's probably not going anywhere but with multiple washings in the future I figured I'd better do a little quilting on it to keep it in place.

If you can see it in the picture, I quilted one flower here. I'm not going to do all the flowers, but at least 10 more I think.

I was a little crafted/sewed out for about a month, but I'm back! I did a few quick projects yesterday. First, I had some of that super soft dotted minky fabric. I just got a satin blanket binding and made a little lovey.

Don't let the picture fool you. Emery is in no way attached to any blanket or stuffed animal or anything. He's just modeling it for me.

I used some Winnie the Pooh printed plastic stuff to make a bib for Emery. He's wanting to feed himself more lately and well it's a messy business! I just put some off white fabric behind it and used wide double bias tape around the edges. Then, just a no-sew Velcro dot to hold it on.

It's roughly done, but I think it will do the job!

It turned out ok. Not very many people came so I didn't sell very much. But it looked like no one else did either. But I met some nice people and had the experience of doing a show. If you like something, let me know I probably still have some left! (And I've dropped my prices on some stuff too!)

Holiday Market Craft Show

As some of you may already know, I'm going to have a table at the Simpsonville Holiday Market Craft Show. It's my first craft show so I'm not quite sure what to expect, but I'm excited! I made my first amigurumi animal! It is a tiny hippo and I think he is super cute :)
My hands hurt because I haven't crocheted in a while, but it was worth it!

Fruit Cards

I was inspired by an article in Family Fun Magazine to do some paint crafts. It looked fun: cut an apple in half and paint white in the middle and red around the edges then stamp on cardstock. Seems easy enough. But as it turned out, it totally didn't work. And I realized I could freehand paint an apple better than that was stamping. So, even though I've never been a painter or artist before, I think they turned out pretty cute!

This is a set of 6 red apples on small cards.4 fold and 2 are flat
Then I tried green and decided to make a set of 3 green and 3 red on large cards.

I liked them so much I thought I'd try to do some cherries

I did a set of small (side opening) and large (top opening) of these

This is my cool stamp I had made with my "name" so I can put it on all the things I make

(Notice the cherries are similar to the ones above? That is because I drew this cherry design especially for my stamp!)

Birthday Hat

For Emery's 2nd birthday I wanted to make him a cool Birthday hat! I made it with felt and(since mine was the thin cheap stuff) a piece of flexible plastic inbetween to hold it stiff.
The back has an elastic band. I made it a tiny bit smaller than I should have so it fits a little snug. At least it won't fall off.

Baby Shower Book

I made this baby shower book for my friend Liz. She's having a little boy within a month! It includes a place for everyone to sign who came to the shower, a page for guessing what day the baby will arrive, and few pages for motherly advice. At the back I left a page for a little picture of the little guy when he arrives. I got the idea from my other friend Laura (thanks again!) and it turned out pretty good. Not perfect, but handmade things usually have some flaws! That is what makes them special (or that's what I keep telling myself so I don't go crazy trying to be a perfectionist!!)

I bought a little clutch like this one off of Etsy.com and really loved it. So I've been trying to make a copy.It is small, but will hold: my cell phone, ID, chapstick, and my keys. I use it when Emery plays outside or for quick trips I don't need my huge bag for.

I was using this cute fabric to make something else but botched it and in an effort to salvage the fabric, just made a little bing bag.

I've been doing a bunch of sewing lately and having a blast! Here is what I've been working on...

Tote bags

I love the pattern. It is nice and roomy inside with a big pocket on the outside.

Hancock fabric was having a 50% off sale on home decor fabrics, so I got a bunch of different weights and patterns of fabric to try.

This fabric is the heaviest and a little tough to sew with multiple layers, but overall I think it still turned out fine!

Patchwork Pincushion

Embroidery

My first attempt at embroidery (in a long time). I made it into a needle book.

Then I made these cherries into a bookmark
This strawberry was next, but I haven't decided what to make it into yet. Any ideas?
I liked this embroidery design that came with a pattern to make a little sachet pouch thing. But I did something wrong, as you can see. The top has a larger space than the other edges. Oops!

And my latest project is a string of vines and flowers on a kitchen towel. This is what I have done so far. It wil be a while! But I'll post it when it's done!

Crocheted Ball

Crocheted Bookmarks

This is my most recent bookmark I've crocheted. If you can tell, the bottom flower is a little different. That's because it took me until the 5th flower to figure out how to start the center right! All the others were my sad and unsuccessful attempt at it.

I love this fan design! And when using size 30 thread it's small and dainty!
This was the first attempt at this "quicky" bookmark, as it was called. It's a little rough but I'll give it another try.
This was the first kind I tried. I made a bunch for friends and family for Christmas '07 and got really fast at making them. I averaged under 1 hour. I think the first one I made took 3 hours!
